The other major research focus of CSD is on disability studies. The inauguration of the UNCRPD in 2008 signalled the recognition of disability as a human rights issue. Research in different countries demonstrated that disability is a development issue by mapping its bidirectional link to poverty. The WHO's World Report on Disability (WRD), prepared in response to a request of the World Health Assembly, affirms the work of disability rights advocates and attempts to fill the knowledge and information gap concerning disability. The lack of a standard measure of disability across countries makes definition, comparisons and statistical estimates of incidence a challenging task. This area of study has not yet begun to receive a sustained focus in social science research, and CSD Hyderabad is committed to initiating and building research in this important field.
