Professor Kalpana Kannabiran, Director, Council for Social Development and Co-founder, Asmita Resource Centre for Women has received the Amartya Sen Award for Distinguished Social Scientists for the year 2012 in the discipline of law.  These awards have been instituted under the aegis of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), the national organization for promoting social science research in India and carry a citation and cash award of rupees ten lakh.  These prestigious awards are meant to honour the outstanding contributions made by social science scholars towards promoting scientific knowledge in the domain of social sciences. These are envisaged to be the highest award for social science research in India, similar to Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Sciences given by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).  Dr. Kannabiran is one of six social scientists to receive the award in its inaugural year.  The awards were given away by Professor Amartya Sen at a ceremony in New Delhi on 6th May 2013.  Dr. Kannabiran, who received the news while travelling abroad, received the award and citation in absentia.
