Research > Disability Studies

The third major research focus is on disability studies. The inauguration of the UNCRPD in 2008 signaled the recognition of disability as a human rights issue. Research in different countries has also demonstrated the ways in which disability is a development issue as well by mapping its bidirectional link to poverty. The WHO’s World Report on Disability (WRD), prepared in response to a request of the World Health Assembly, affirms the work of disability rights advocates and attempts to fill the knowledge and information gap with respect to disability. The lack of a standard measure of disability across countries makes definition, comparisons and statistical estimates of incidence a challenging task. This is an area that has not yet begun to receive a sustained focus in social science research, and CSD – Hyderabad is committed to initiating and building research in this important field.
